Some of these templates sit under Others in the picker.
Each template has a main section that you can configure but not remove. Around it you can add the sections described in Sections. A change to a template applies to every page that uses it: every blog post, for example.
Blog
The blog page lists the posts of one blog. Its main section is Blog posts (all settings).
- Layout: Editorial shows the newest post in a wide card at the top of the first page, then the other posts as cards. Grid shows cards only. The wide card needs a blog with at least two posts, and it is left out when a customer filters by tag.
- Show tags as filters: lists every tag used in the blog as a chip under the title. A chip narrows the blog to the posts with that tag, and the first chip shows all posts again.
- Posts per page: 4 to 24. Page numbers show under the posts when there are more.
- Show date, Show author, Show comment count and Show excerpt control what each card shows besides the post's image, first tag and title. All four are on in a new installation. The number of comments shows on each card and on the wide card only when the blog takes comments. The excerpt is the one you write for the post in the Shopify admin, or the beginning of the post when you leave it empty.
Breadcrumbs always show above the blog's title. A blog without posts shows a short message and a link back to the home page.
Blog post
The blog post template holds two sections: Blog post, the post itself (all settings), and Blog posts, which suggests three more posts from the same blog.
What the post shows
- Above the title: the breadcrumbs, the post's first tag as a chip when Show tags is on and, with Show reading time on, an estimate such as "4 min read". The theme works it out from the length of the post.
- Under the title: the author with Show author and the publish date with Show date.
- Show featured image: the post's image in a wide frame under the heading.
- The content, in a column that is comfortable to read.
- A side column, beside the content on desktop and under it on smaller screens. It holds the share button, the tags and any blocks you add.
Show share button adds a button that opens the sharing options of the customer's device. On a browser without them, it copies the link to the post.
Show tags lists all of the post's tags in the side column. Each tag links to the blog filtered by that tag. The chip above the title follows the same setting: turn Show tags off and both go.
Add blocks beside a post
The Blog post section accepts theme blocks and app blocks in its side column. A Product card block, for example, puts a product next to the text. Blocks belong to the template, so they show beside every post that uses it. To show different blocks beside some posts, create another blog post template in the template picker and assign it to those posts in the Shopify admin.
Comments and moderation
Comments are a setting of each blog in the Shopify admin, not of the theme. There you choose whether a blog takes comments and whether they wait for your approval.
When a blog takes comments, each post shows:
- The number of comments, then the comments with the author's name and the date, 10 per page.
- A form with a name, an email address and the comment. All three are required, and a note tells customers that their email address is not published.
When comments wait for approval, the form says so. After posting, the customer reads that the comment will appear once it has been approved, and you approve it in the Shopify admin. Without approval, the comment appears at once.
Regular pages
Pages such as About or Shipping use the Page section (all settings). It shows the breadcrumbs, the page's title and the content you write in the Shopify admin. Headings, lists, tables, quotes and images in that content are styled by the theme.
- Content width: Narrow keeps lines of text short and easy to read. Wide suits pages with tables or large images.
- Show breadcrumbs shows or hides the trail above the title.
To build a richer page, add sections under the Page section, such as Collapsible content for a questions page. Because a template applies to every page that uses it, create a new template in the template picker for a page that needs its own layout, then choose that template for the page in the Shopify admin.
Shopify's policy pages, such as the refund policy and the privacy policy that you write in Settings > Policies, are not templates of the theme, so they have no sections to edit. The theme styles their title and text like its other text pages.
Contact page
The theme includes a page template named contact. It holds three sections: Page, which shows the page's title and content, Contact form and Map.
- In the Shopify admin, create a page for your contact details and choose the contact template for it.
- In the theme editor, open the template picker and choose Pages, then contact.
- Select Contact form to change its heading and text and to turn Show phone number field on or off.
- Select Map and replace the sample content: the chip, the heading, the address and hours in the Text block, and the Image.
The form asks for a name, an email address, a phone number if you keep that field, and a message. Only the email address is required. Customers who are signed in find their name, email address and phone number filled in. After sending, the customer sees a confirmation at the top of the form. If something is wrong, a summary lists each problem with a link to its field. Shopify sends the message to your store by email.
The Map section shows an image that you upload, not an interactive map. To point customers to directions, add a Button block to it and set its Link, for example to the address of your store in a maps service. See all Contact form settings and all Map settings.
Collection list page
The collection list page shows all your collections. Its main section is Collection list (all settings).
Every collection shows as a tile, in alphabetical order, under a heading with the number of collections. A tile uses the collection's image, or the photo of its first product when the collection has none.
- Collections per page: 8 to 48. Page numbers show under the grid when there are more.
- Columns on desktop: 2 to 5. Tablets show at most three columns and phones show two.
- Show product count adds the number of products to each tile.
- Show breadcrumbs shows or hides the trail above the heading.
This page cannot leave a collection out or change the order. To show chosen collections in your own order, use the Collection list section on another page.
Password page
Visitors see the password page while your store is protected by a password, which you set in Online Store > Preferences. The page has no header, footer or cart. Its main section is Password page (all settings).
- Your logo from theme settings, or your store name when there is no logo.
- Image: an optional photo. It sits beside the content on wide screens and above it on small ones. An image with a 4:5 ratio fits best.
- Chip text: a short label, such as "Opening soon". It shows on the image, or above the heading when there is no image.
- Heading: the main line of the page.
- The message for visitors that you enter with the password in the Shopify admin. It is not a theme setting.
-
Show email signup: an email field with a "Notify me" button. A visitor who signs up is added
to your customers in Shopify as an email subscriber, with the tags
prospectandpassword page, so you can write to them when you open. - An "Enter using password" button, which opens a dialog with the password field. A wrong password opens the dialog again with an error message.
The bottom of the page shows the "Powered by Shopify" link and a login link for the store owner.
You can add sections under the Password page section. Content sections such as Rich text or Image with text suit this page; sections that sell products do not, because visitors cannot buy yet.
Gift card page
Customers reach this page from the email Shopify sends them when they receive a gift card. It has no sections and no settings of its own. It takes your logo, colors and fonts from theme settings.
The page shows:
- Your logo or store name, linked to the home page.
- A picture of the card with your store name, its value and the last four characters of its code.
- The balance, and the expiry date when the card has one. A card that has expired says so, and a disabled card says that it has been disabled.
- The code, with a "Copy code" button.
- A QR code of the card, for use in a physical store.
- An "Add to Apple Wallet" button, when your store offers Apple Wallet passes for gift cards.
- A link back to the store and a button that prints the page.
404 page
Customers see this page when a link leads nowhere. Its main section is Page not found (all settings). It shows a heading, a short message and a link to the home page, plus two optional ways forward:
- Show search field adds a search field that opens the search results page.
- Show popular searches adds the links of your Popular searches menu as chips. You choose that menu in Theme settings > Search behavior; see Header and footer.
Add a section such as Featured collection under it to give customers products to look at.
Customer accounts
The theme uses Shopify's hosted customer accounts. The sign-in, orders and profile pages are Shopify's own pages, so they are not in the template picker and theme settings do not style them. You turn customer accounts on in Settings > Customer accounts in the Shopify admin.
What the theme adds is the way in:
- The account button in the header shows when customer accounts are on. Visitors use it to sign in. Signed-in customers get a menu of account links, which you edit in Content > Menus as the menu Shopify names "Customer account main menu".
- On phones and tablets, the menu sheet ends with a "Sign in" link, or an "Account" link for signed-in customers.
Signed-in customers also find their details filled in on the contact form. See Header and footer.
